In the domain of social interaction, people with autism have difficulty
coordinating nonverbal modes of communication such as gesture and gaze,
establishing peer relationships by showing interest in others,
responding to social overtures, and joining in social play,
sharing interest and enjoyment by coordinating attention,
and responding reciprocally to social and emotional stimuli.
In general, the social deficit in autism can be characterised as a lack of ability to rapidly select and coordinate appropriate behaviours, especially in response to unpredictable and unforseen social overtures from others.
