We decided to answer this question of physiology by having subjects perform a task that demands rapid shifting of visual spatial attention.

In this task we flash red and green coloured squares in the left and right portions of a video screen.

At any given time, one side of the screen is attended, and the other is ignored.

A red flash on the attended side cues an overt behavioural response - a finger movement - and also a shift of attention to the opposite side.
