The Mattababy Scholarship
The Mattababy Scholarship is a full scholarship for one session at a CTY summer residential program, to be awarded to a first-time CTY student with demonstrable financial need. This scholarship is funded by a group of current and former CTY teachers, many of whom were once CTY students, who feel that their time at CTY has enriched their lives greatly and would like to provide this opportunity to others. The applicant must submit a one-page essay. The applicant should take care to select a topic for this essay that conveys a sense of how (s)he approaches problems and what (s)he considers important in education and in life. Here are some suggestions:
-
Tell us about a problem that you solved or a project that you completed, such as a mathematical proof, an essay, a story, a poem, a computer program, or a work of art. What difficulties did you face, and how did you go about resolving them? What was important to you about the experience?
-
Who has been the most influential person in your education to date? Why do you feel that person has been important? What has their contribution to your education been? This person may be someone you see every day, someone you have met who has inspired you, or perhaps a historical or fictional figure.
-
What advice would you give to a person three years younger than yourself about their education? Think about what has helped to shape your education: what has inspired you or interested you in a particular topic, what study habits or topics were crucial for you.
You must also complete the CTY Summer Programs Financial Aid Application form, and send it directly to CTY, with your CTY Summer Programs Application, in time to meet the postmark deadline.
Although your completed CTY Summer Programs Financial Aid Application form must be submitted on paper, your essay may be submitted electronically. If you have access to facilities for electronic submission, we prefer that you submit electronically. However, we recognize that many people don't have access to such facilities, so no one will be penalized in any way for submitting on paper.
Your essay may be submitted as follows:
If you submit by mail, you may enclose a Macintosh disk or a DOS disk containing files in plain text format. If you enclose a disk, please also enclose a printed copy in case your disk is damaged in transit.
You may also wish to apply for other CTY scholarships.
